What Are You Thankful For?

Gratitude.

It’s a brand new month. Second to last month of the year 2017. Time for reflection. Time to look back on what you have accomplished and how you got here. Things like this do not necessarily have to wait until Thanksgiving. We can practice this every day and every night.

Occasionally when I turn on the news, I am bombarded and horrified at watching mass killings happening every day or what the tabloid has put out there in the mainstream. It reminds me that this and every morsel of negativity is out of my control and that what I am in control of is how I can react to it. The choice on how I want to perceive things, people, events, etc. Another example of an emotional vortex is being sucked into another person’s drama and that can only lead you into a black hole. The themes I run across as a physician and coach are the themes of what is NOT going right in my life. Does this sound like you?

Sometimes those thoughts do go through my head as well. However, what I found was the perfect antidote to that is Gratitude! Believe it or not. Gratitude ultimately allows you to redirect your focus on what is positive or what is going right in your life.

  1. Create a gratitude practice. Three things you are grateful for either before you leave for work or right before you go to bed.
  2. Partner up. Share what you are grateful for with another person. Whether it is a family member or close friend. This strengthens relationships.
  3. Focus on what you have and not what you don't have. Remember that you are a collection of the sum of your choices until this moment. Choose wisely.
